Agnes Miklos-Illes - Music Summer Camp Magic Flute

Why was the original set of Mozart's opera,
The Magic Flute, inspired by the art of Egypt?

What does the secret Freemason Society have to do with the plot of the Magic Flute?

Why were Maurice Sendak, the children's book author, and Marc Chagall, the famous painter so fascinated by this opera?

We will be exploring these questions, and also learn about politics, art, music, science and fashion of Mozart's time. Students will be also making their own puppets and set designs, as well as singing some of the easier arias of the opera. (We are careful by choosing the arias. We do not want to damage anyone's vocal chords.) Children who can play an instrument can accompany our singers. Creating a story line based on elements of the opera is the last stage of work we do before our magical puppet show begins! The Queen of the Night, the bird catcher Papageno, Prince Tamino, his love Pamina, and Sarastro, the priest of Enlightenment, will be our guides on this journey into the world of opera.
